Another leak...

Typically, I start using the V1000 again and it resists...

The 34 year old output shaft oil seal has started to leak... It's an 'engine out' job to replace it, so I'd very much like to have a new one handy before I pull the lump out (again).

I know the ID is 1.65" or 42mm, but that's all I have...  Has anyone ever replaced this seal?

Or does anyone know the full dimensions, so I can order a nice new one (or two).

Hello Jeff,

Are you certain it is the oil seal? The sprocket has to be fitted onto the splines of the output shaft with ALOT of silicone sealant before fitting the washer and nut.

Hi Robert;

Well...  It started leaking (noticeably) on Saturday, which was the third time it's been out since the 'winter hiaitus'.  I cleaned the oil away and took it out again on Sunday...  The oil is definitely coming out from behind the gearbox sprocket...

When I changed the sprocket (early last year) I used a Loctite sealant on the splines and a (different) Loctite thread-locker on the nut.

I covered approx 3K miles on her last year and no leak...  250 miles this year and it's peeing out...  The sprocket nut is still well tight and the symptoms certainly seem to suggest the seal has stuck to the shaft whle the bike wasn't being used, and torn when it was put back into service...

The thing is...  It's an engine-out job just to remove, re-seal and refit the sprocket...  Given the symptoms, would you leave the old seal in place..?
