indicators and self cancelling unit

Has anyone got to the bottom of all the wiring that seems to be needed for the indicators and self-cancelling unit??

The left hand indicators on my bike have stopped working. Checked bulbs and earth connections. I can obviously rule out the flasher relay because it doesn't know left from right but can I assume the same applies for the self-cancelling box also??? The right hand indicators work fine and the self-cancelling also works on that side too. I fitted a new spare LH handlebar switch unit but that didn't help.

Any help or advice much appreciated.

Cheers,

Robert

Hi Rob;

David Sharp designed and constructed a replacement for the original indicator cancelling unit and he has passed the drawings over to me for further work.

The original unit uses a "symmetrical" design that employs a latching relay in each half.  These relays connect the indicator flasher unit to the appropriate lamps (left or right, of course) and disconnect it once the appropriate number of pulses has been received from the speedo cable switch, or the indicator cancel switch is pressed.

The unit draws a significant amount of electrical current and is prone to burning out the tracks of the PCB, and/or the resistor in the cancel circuit.  These components can be seen if the case is opened, but anything else wrong cannot be seen as the circuit is "potted" in epoxy resin.

I would try a substitute unit first and confirm that the fault lies in the self-cancelling unit.  A repair may be possible if it is the unit and I may have relays suitable, if required.

BTW Rob;

The switchgear and indicator wiring on the V1000/Vampire are an almost direct "lift" from the 1980 Model Suzuki GS1000.  Spare switch knobs and buttons for the GS fit exactly, and the connectors too.

There is much evidence that the indicator self cancelling unit has given problems on that bike too.  Most GS1000 owners seem to have retro-fitted the self-cancelling switch from earlier Suzuki models (nearly every Suzuki model from 1975 to 1979 had the correct manual switch).

There are wiring diagrams and a trouble-shooting chart for the indicators in the GS1000 Service manual.  A PDF copy can be downloaded here:

(You may find that the site requires that you go to their home page and start there).

Hope that helps

Hi Folks - we now have a solution to the self-cancelling indicator issues that have plagued some folk...

You can read all about the repair/upgrade here:

Hello Jeff,

I fitted your indicators mod and tested it with a 200 mile ride to/from the bike festival at Prescott hill Climb last Sunday. It worked a treat but for the fact that after 35 years of riding the HESKETH it was difficult for me to stop cancelling the indicators by pressing the switch down. Hence, the first 50 miles was spent with random hazard flashing etc. I got the hang of it on the way home though.

Thanks very much for all your hard work on this.

Prescott was Excellent! The bike ran beautifully, the weather was gorgeous, the scenery was lovely, the roads were brilliant, need I say more?

Cheers,

Robert

Hi Robert...

I've only been riding mine for 5 years, but old habits, eh..?  I found that my first ride out was disasterous, with the 'jazards' on more than they were off...  ::)

2nd ride out went much better, with the return run having me look as if I almost knew what I was doing (almost)  ;)

Don't forget, all my 'hard work. is just me continuing my hobby and  it's all to my own benefit, of course... :-)

Glad you enjoyed Prescott and that your bike is going well...  Mine is in the van as I type...  Stafford bound 1st thing tomorrow...  Pity you won't be there.
